ISBN 978 1 903491 63 8 Published by NIGHTINGALE BOOKS £7.99 | Two teenagers with the world against them. Katie say, "I was so angry when I heard I was going to move to Spain. I had a cool life in London with my friends, clubs and things. I missed out a lot when we spent weeks clearing the house and selling everything. When I arrived dad collected us in a jalopy. It was searing in the back. I was fuming until I saw the blue sea, and then my heart sank seeing where we were to live. I had no friends and knew barely any Spanish. Then I saw next door. I was not impressed. I shrugged my shoulders and greeted him. I had no idea I had entered a war zone. My parents were so happy like little kids and they wanted to see the business with me. I refused. I could go with my parents, stay locked in the hovel or go on the beach. I chose the beach and walked a long way, sat and tried to pass the day until I could go home. It was strange the breeze, the lapping waves and the sea gulls. Then I heard it a baby crying. I got up to see what it was. That moment changed my life." Fiction: Children / young adult (Mystery /
Crime) | Reviews "LOOKMAN has woven together a story with an interesting mix of literary elements meant to enchant and surprise avid young booklovers.” "Children of The Sea is an imaginative, well written story and I recommend it with the expectation that it will provoke thought and a concern for how different cultures, races and religions might interact with each other in a modern world on a more understanding and peaceful basis." | |

![]() A conversation between Katie's friend Amelia and Kelly during a lesson. Amelia turned to Kelly in class. "Yer know my friend Katie." "Katie Kirchin? The one who sold her Wii to you." Amelia hid her mouth behind her hand. "Yes! She's got a boyfriend, at last." "What in Spain?" "Yeah! Yer know, she writes to me." "So what's the word on this boy? Is he fit?" "Yeah! She found him on the beach." Kelly frowned, "On the beach?" "Yeah! From what she says, he must have been skinny dipping or something." (They both giggled infectiously.) "Shush we'll get detention." Kelly's looked up her eyes opened, "In the raw?" "Yeah!" Amelia nodded. They both continue to snigger behind their hands. | ![]() |

A conversation between Amelia's brother, Craig and his friend Ryan.
Craig turned to his friend while sitting on the grass watching sports. "I heard Katie's got a Spanish boyfriend."
"Oh yeah!" Ryan looked up from the grass frowning.
"Why so glum?"
"Nothing!" Ryan turned away.
"I've seen you watching her playing netball and at swimming club. She wasn't bad was she?"
"Humph! No!" Ryan fidgeted.
"You fancied her didn't you?" Craig grinned.
"Er, what!" Ryan looked up.
"Why didn't you ask her out?"
Ryan turned away. "I hadn't the nerve."
Amelia and Kelly continued their conversation while walking home from school.
Kelly turned to Amelia, "Well what's this about, Katie the mouse having a boyfriend?"
"Yeah, in Spain."
"Er, what's the skinny?"
"She says he's really fit. He's got a six or eight pack and has a body like an Australian lifeguard."
"Nah! I don't believe it!" Kelly sneered.
"Well, that's what she writes. He's blonde, good-looking and really cute, but he's got amnesia."
"No chance! He's probably a skinny dipping dork, without a brain."
"I've her letter somewhere." Amelia stopped put her school bag on a
garden wall and rummaged through it. "Here it is! There's the letter
inside, and his photo!"
"Wow, he really is a hunk!"
"Yeah! She says they're both outsiders. He fought some local boys to
defend her. And wait for it! One day, they were trapped in a cave all
alone."
"Really! There're some boys I'd like to be trapped alone with myself! Katie's boyfriend and your older brother included."
"Don't be disgusting, Craig! Yuck!"
![]() Craig and Ryan are waiting to board the bus home after football practice. Craig simpered to Ryan. "Well, why didn't you ask Katie out?" "I don't know? Ryan slapped his side. "I just let it drift. I couldn't find the right moment." "You're too shy with girls. Yer know, they're just as shy as you are! Younger girls like Katie and my sister are all gagging to be invited out by an older boy." "I know!" Ryan shook his head. "Well, she's in Spain now! It's too late...." | ![]() |
![]() A week later, in the playground before registration Amelia ran to greet Kelly. "Hi! I got another letter from Katie today." Kelly turned smiling."Hiya!" "Yer know that boy Katie found." "Yeah!" "He's moved into her parent's house with her." "Not together?" "Nah! He sleeps downstairs." "That could be embarrassing!" "Yeah! cos she sleeps next to the bathroom and her bedroom door doesn't stay closed." "Oh!" Kelly grimaced. "Yeah, she props it with a chair. She writes there's a Spanish boy next door who keeps sticking his finger up at her and throws things threw her window. He really hates her." "It's a good thing she's got one good friend then...." |
